Nevada Basketball Arena Centerpiece of $1B Private Investment in Reno

A Nevada casino is putting significant financial might behind reinvigorating the city of Reno and the University of Nevada.

Grand Sierra Resort recently announced it is injecting $1 billion to build up its existing 140-acre property — the largest private investment in Reno’s history.

“The vision is to transform GSR into a destination where community, sports and entertainment come together,” said owner Alex Meruelo.

At the center of the plan is a state-of-the-art, 10,000-seat arena that will be the home of the Nevada men’s basketball team. It is scheduled for completion in 2026, and the Wolf Pack will begin play there for either the 2026-27 or 2027-28 season.

Nevada’s women’s basketball team will continue to play at the 12,000-seat Lawlor Events Center, which also currently hosts the men’s team.

Aside from the arena, GSR plans to revamp the Grand Bay area with several entertainment and hospitality upgrades.

It starts with a multi-floor, TopGolf-style driving range that hits into the water. There will also be a scenic walking path around the Bay, as well as a Bellagio-style fountain with a water show.

The resort will also construct a new 800-room hotel tower, approximately 300 affordable housing units, and at least one new parking garage to meet the anticipated demand.

“It’s a massive win for our citizens, a win for the University of Nevada, and a win for tourism,” Reno mayor Hillary Schieve said.
