Sherrone Moore Sentenced to 18 Months Probation

Moore must pay roughly $1,100 in fines, continue to undergo mental health treatment, and avoid alcohol as part of the sentence.

On Tuesday, former Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore was sentenced to 18 months probation and roughly $1,100 in fines related to his December arrest.

District Court Judge J. Cedric Simpson also ordered Moore to continue mental health treatment, avoid alcohol, and not have contact with the woman who was a Michigan staffer and whose home Moore was charged with breaking into in December.

Moore will not serve any jail time unless he violates the terms of his probation. The case has a review hearing in October 2027.

“I don’t believe … incarceration would be an appropriate sentence,” Simpson said. “Frankly Mr. Moore, you had no right to do what you did…you had no right to spread your pain to her.”

Michigan fired Moore following an investigation into a relationship the coach had with a staff member. Around the time news of his firing broke, Moore was arrested after breaking into the staffer’s apartment and charged with three counts: third-degree home invasion, stalking, and breaking and entering. The home invasion charge is a felony. Moore’s legal team fought the charges and in March he reached a plea agreement with prosecutors on two misdemeanor charges.

The Wolverines went 17–8 in two seasons under Moore after he replaced Jim Harbaugh, who left his alma mater to coach the Los Angeles Chargers. Moore was an assistant under Harbaugh from 2018 to 2023.

“What happened in football this fall is not defining of the 99.99% of the people in that department who are doing the right things,” Michigan AD Warde Manuel said to Front Office Sports after the school’s basketball team won the men’s national title. “I’m proud of my staff, I’m proud of my coaches, I’m proud of my student-athletes in the way they comport themselves.”
