NEW YORK — At least four people were killed and multiple others wounded during a shooting Monday evening at 345 Park Avenue, a office building in Midtown Manhattan that is home to the NFL’s headquarters, along with other major companies including Blackstone.

The shooter died of a self-inflicted wound, with New York City police commissioner Jessica Tisch saying the shooter had been “neutralized.”  Later, she confirmed four deaths, including an off-duty New York City police officer. Tisch also said several other people sustained injuries while attempting to flee from the shooter.

“He seemed to have blamed the NFL,” New York mayor Eric Adams said. “The NFL headquarters was located in the building, and he mistakenly went up the wrong elevator bank.”

The league is headquartered on the fifth through eighth floors of the building. The shooter reportedly died on the 33rd floor.

NFL employees were told to shelter in place amid the shooting, according to ESPN

Police say the shooter was carrying a note that read “football gave me CTE,” a chronic disease linked to brain injuries.

The NYPD identified the shooter as 27-year-old Shane Tamura, who drove from Las Vegas to New York to commit the shooting.

The shooting took place at some point between 5:30 and 7:30 pm ET. More than a dozen police vehicles, state troopers, ambulances, and helicopters were deployed to the building’s surrounding blocks, with more ambulances continuing to arrive until 8 p.m. ET.

Police officers shut down multiple blocks of the area during the busy midtown rush hour, allowing only first responders and local media. Workers from the surrounding buildings were escorted out of the area.

One office worker from the surrounding area, who declined to be named, told Front Office Sports they received multiple alerts around 6:30 p.m. ET to shelter in place and then evacuate with police. The worker said they had a friend at 345 Park Ave who they believed was still in the building as of 8:15 p.m.

An NFL spokesman issued this statement, which was sent to league employees:

“As has been widely reported, a gunman committed an unspeakable act of violence in our building at 345 Park Avenue. One of our employees was seriously injured in this attack. He is currently in the hospital and in stable condition. NFL staff are at the hospital and we are supporting his family.

We believe that all of our employees are otherwise safe and accounted for, and the building has nearly been cleared.

We are deeply grateful to the law enforcement officers who responded to this threat quickly and decisively and to Officer Islam, who gave his life to protect others.”

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.
