LeBron James isn’t the only athlete who wants to invest in an NBA team.
On Monday, boxing legend Floyd Mayweather revealed that he’s been in contact with certain individuals about owning a franchise.
“That’s something I’ve been working on behind the scenes, but I’ve never [come] out and publicly talked about that with the media,” said Mayweather. “Me and my team have been working behind the scenes with the NBA. I can’t say exactly where, but I’m working on getting a team.”
Though NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said the NBA doesn’t plan to expand in the near future, he did admit the league will “invariably” move one day.
James, meanwhile, was a little more specific with his intentions, saying he wants to “own the team in Vegas” — making it sound like the idea will come to fruition one day. Mayweather shared similar sentiments, expressing his desire to own a team whether it’s in Vegas or elsewhere.
Mayweather, who was enshrined in the International Boxing Hall of Fame this past weekend, has an estimated net worth of $450 million and projected career earnings of $1.1 billion.
The boxer recently said he’s worth at least $2 billion thanks to business ventures, and in March, he teamed up with commercial real estate agency CGI Merchant in a $250 million investment partnership.
Silver cited a talent disparity holding the league back from expanding anytime soon.
However, Oak View Group has already built a $1.3 billion stadium in Seattle, and is currently in the works to build an “NBA-ready” stadium in Vegas for $3 billion.
Perhaps James and Mayweather can form a tag team and build a new empire when their respective athletic careers are over.
