Manchester United has locked in one of its core players, inking playmaking midfielder Bruno Fernandes to a contract extension through 2026.

The 27-year-old Portugal international — who arrived at Old Trafford from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020 for a $64 million transfer fee — doubled his yearly salary to $16.4 million. The deal also includes an option for an additional year.

Fernandes has nine goals and six assists in 27 games this season for United, and 35 goals and 25 assists over 78 career Premier League matches.

He also scored twice against North Macedonia on Tuesday to help Portugal secure a spot in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

United, which was eliminated from the UEFA Champions League by Atletico Madrid in the Round of 16, will face Leicester City in Premier League action Saturday at Old Trafford.
