The tide of women’s professional soccer continues to rise.
During an interview with ESPN, San Diego Wave star Alex Morgan revealed that the club has sold more than 27,000 tickets to its Sept. 17 match against Angel City F.C. — enough to break the NWSL’s all-time single-game attendance record. Team officials confirmed Morgan’s statement.
The previous record was set in 2019 when 25,218 fans turned up to watch a match between the Portland Thorns and the North Carolina Courage at Providence Park.
This season’s theoretical record-breaker will be the Wave’s first game at the brand new Snapdragon Stadium on the Mission Valley campus of San Diego State University. The new stadium is being built on the site of the old Qualcomm Stadium and will also serve as the home of SDSU football.
San Diego is now setting its sights on selling out its inaugural game there.
“To see this number today, right now, and just knowing that we’re gonna get a sellout, it’s just an incredible feeling because this club set its mind on breaking the single-match attendance in league history,” said Morgan. “They’ve done that now, but now the goals don’t stop for this club and I’m just really proud to be a part of that.”
In their inaugural season, the Wave currently sit second in the NWSL table, level on points with the first-place Thorns and third-place Houston Dash.
If San Diego can make it to the NWSL Championship, they’ll be playing on another big stage: CBS will broadcast the Oct. 29 final in primetime for the first time.
