USTA to Give Out Record $60M in US Open Prize Money

  • The singles main draw payouts start at $80,000 and increase each round.
  • The USTA agreed to these figures after meetings with the WTA and ATP Player Councils.
Danielle Parhizkaran-USA TODAY Sports

Ahead of the 2022 US Open, the USTA has announced that it will hand out over $60 million in prize money — the most in the history of the event and an increase from last year’s record $57.5 million.

In the singles main draw, the payouts will start at $80,000 in the Round of 128, increasing each round and culminating with a $2.6 million prize to the champion.

For the doubles main draw, Round of 64 teams will receive $21,300 and the champions will receive $688,000 collectively.

The US Open Qualifying Tournament — held prior to the main draws — will give out more than $6.2 million in prize money, a 223% increase from 2016. The final round of the qualifiers will award $44,000.

The USTA agreed to these figures after meetings with the WTA and ATP Player Councils that focused on increasing prize money for players competing in the earlier rounds.

This year’s edition of the New York-based tournament could be one of the most popular in some time: Ticket sales for the event skyrocketed following Serena Williams’ retirement announcement.

The tournament’s main draw gets underway on August 29.
