Jason Wright became the first Black team president in NFL history Monday when the Washington Football Team announced his hiring. At 38 years old, Wright is also now the youngest president in the league.

Wright spent seven seasons in the NFL as a running back and most recently was a partner at consulting firm McKinsey & Company. Speaking about his hire on “Good Morning America,” Wright committed to cleaning up Washington’s organizational culture.

Wright’s goal may be achievable despite The Washington Post’s report earlier this summer that revealed a deep history of sexual harassment allegations within the organization. Washington’s new head coach Ron Rivera, one of the four minority head coaches in the NFL, took a front seat in the team’s effort to retire its previous racist nickname.

The organization has made several notable hires along with Rivera and Wright:

— Julie Donaldson, vice president of media operations and the first woman to have a full-time role in a game day radio broadcast.

—  Doug Williams, senior vice president of player development. As a Washington player, Williams was the first Black quarterback to win a Super Bowl.

— Jennifer King, the first Black woman full-year coaching intern in the NFL.

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

Tennis remains the most lucrative sport for women as nine of the top 10 highest-paid female athletes of 2020 make their living playing the sport.

Naomi Osaka leads the list, making $34 million through 15 endorsement partners, including Procter & Gamble, All Nippon Airways and Nissin. Roger Federer was the only tennis player of either gender to earn more money than Osaka through endorsements.

Soccer player Alex Morgan is the lone non-tennis player in the top 10, bringing in all but $400,000 of her $4.6 million through endorsements, including partnerships with Nike, Coca-Cola and Volkswagen. Fellow USWNT player Megan Rapinoe finished just outside the top ten with an estimated $4.2 million in total earnings.

Game-Worn Jordans Sell For Record Price At Auction

Christies

A pair of game-worn Michael Jordan Nike Air Jordan 1 shoes were auctioned off for a record $615,000 last week. Jordan wore the shoes in a 1985 exhibition game in Italy, and a piece of the backboard — shattered by a Jordan dunk — is still embedded in the shoe.

While the auction, held by Christie’s, brought below the $650,000 to $850,000 pre-auction estimate, the sale continues the boom in sneaker culture. The previous record was set three months ago, when a game-worn and autographed pair of Nike Air Jordan 1s from Jordan’s rookie season were sold for $560,000.

The pair from Jordan’s rookie season sold on the day the final episode of “The Last Dance” aired. ESPN’s 30 for 30 helped fuel a surge of Air Jordans, with sales of the brand growing 38% during the broadcasts.

It’s not just Air Jordans having a hot year, however. Foot Locker — which reports its full quarterly earnings Friday — already has revealed an 18% increase in sales for its second quarter ending Aug. 1. Among the top-selling sneakers in the first half of 2020:

— Adidas NMD R1

— Nike Air Force 1 Low

— Nike Air Max 270

— Nike Air VaporMax Plus

— Jordan XIII Retro

LeBron James, Others Sign Letter Urging Fight Against Voter Suppression

Kevin C. Cox/Pool Photo-USA TODAY Sports

Athletes and artists behind More Than A Vote, a voting rights coalition launched by LeBron James in June, released a letter urging fans to fight Black voter suppression. The letter was signed by James, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and USA Track athlete Allyson Felix — along with other prominent athletes and entertainers.

“Join us and take your protest to the election and fight to keep our community from being silenced,” the letter reads. “The most important thing you all need to know is Black voters matter more than ever.”

Last week, the organization worked with the Los Angeles Dodgers to make Dodger Stadium a polling site for November’s general election, joining a variety of sports venues to partner with the organization.

Sports Venue Voting Sites:

— Atlanta’s State Farm Arena

— Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium and Spectrum Center

— Detroit’s Henry Ford Pistons Performance Center

— Sacramento’s Golden 1 Center
