Manchester United pulled together the most expensive team in the history of European soccer during the 2022–23 season, according to a report released Thursday by the UEFA.

The combined transfer cost during the 2023 financial year, meaning before the summer transfer window, hit a record $1.531 billion. That beats the previous record of Real Madrid’s 2020 team, which sat at $1.434 billion. The ’22–23 Manchester City team cost $1.385 billion, becoming history’s third-most-expensive squad.

In the last match of the 2023 fiscal year, City beat United, 2–1, in the FA Cup Final.

The Manchester United squad included:

  • Antony: $102 million
  • Harry Maguire: $100 million
  • Jadon Sancho: $91.5 million
  • Casemiro: $88 million

Manchester United announced a deal in December for billionaire Jim Ratcliffe to pay $1.3 billion to buy a minority stake. Last month, the club lowered its estimated revenue for 2024 after failing to advance past UEFA Champions League group play and hired a new CEO from its rival Manchester City. On the pitch, the team has yet to lose a match in 2024.
