Florida A&M athletic director Angela Suggs was arrested on Monday on fraud charges for allegedly using her corporate credit card at her previous job for personal expenses.
Suggs, 55, turned herself into authorities at Leon County Jail, near the school’s Tallahassee campus, and was released on a $13,500 bond.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement accused Suggs of using her Florida Sports Foundation credit card for casino purchases and charged her with two felony counts of grand theft and four misdemeanor counts of false claims on travel vouchers.
Prior to FAMU, Suggs was the CEO of the Florida Sports Foundation, a nonprofit that operates under the state’s department of commerce.
She was hired as FAMU’s athletic director in October. A month later, FDLE began its investigation of Suggs after it received a criminal referral from the state’s commerce inspector general, which audited Suggs’ credit card purchases and travel reimbursements.
The FDLE’s investigation, which it says “remains active,” found Suggs falsified travel vouchers and classified the unauthorized charges as meals.
FAMU and the FDLE both did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
