Pickleball Courts and a dog park are coming to Petco Park as part of the new $20 million renovation plans the San Diego Padres announced. The upgrades will be completed in time for the 2024 MLB season to coincide with the Padres’ 20th season at Petco Park.

The Padres’ $20M investment will specifically go towards renovating Gallagher Square, an area previously known as Park at the Park that’s located outside centerfield but inside Petco Park’s gates. A statue of Mr. Padre, Baseball Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn, currently resides in Gallagher Square and will be elevated by six feet with an expanded viewing area as part of the renovations. Here is a rundown of the changes coming to Gallagher Square.

  • Tony Gwynn Terrace; a new viewing deck for fans that can be used as a picnic space outside of game time
  • Improved playground and mini field
  • Temporary pickleball courts
  • public art displays
  • Fenced, off-leash dog park
  • Upgraded entry gate at 9th and J Street

Grass at Gallagher Square will also be replaced by turf with terraced lawn seating, with native trees and vegetation planted in the area. The enhanced Petco Park will debut a year before San Diego’s expansion MLS club begins to play at Snapdragon Stadium. Padres star third baseman Manny Machado is part of the MLS team’s ownership group led by Egyptian billionaire Mohamed Mansour.
