The Premier Lacrosse League is reviving its ambitious bubble tournament in a new format — with the aim of soon becoming an Olympic sport.
On Wednesday, the PLL announced that the Championship Series will return in February 2023.
The initial version of the tournament was used as a substitute for the pandemic-affected 2020 season, but this one will be an additional opportunity for the league’s teams to earn a trophy.
The top four teams from the previous season will play a round-robin to determine seeding, followed by a knockout tournament for the championship. There will be wage and prize bonuses based on where each team finishes.
The games will be played in the more internationally accessible World Lacrosse Sixes format, a decision geared toward eventually making lacrosse an Olympic sport.
“As a proud partner of World Lacrosse, we’re excited to showcase the Sixes format and continue to push for lacrosse’s inclusion in the 2028 Olympics,” said co-founder and CEO Michael Rabil.
The league’s fourth season starts June 4.
