Apple Fights Off Supply Chain Issues in $83.4B Quarter

Apple/Design: Alex Brooks

Apple took in $83.4 billion in its fiscal fourth quarter, up 29% year-over-year despite a supply chain crunch.

The tech giant sold $65.1 billion in products, despite a crunch that CEO Tim Cook estimated cost the company around $6 billion.

The company’s wearables segment brought in $8.8 billion in the quarter. The Apple Watch Series 7 debuted on Oct. 15, but some shipment dates have been delayed well into December.

Apple’s services division, which includes Apple TV, Apple Fitness+, and Apple Arcade, grew 25.6% to reach $18.3 billion in revenue. The division has 745 million paid subscribers.

  • The company announced that Apple Fitness+ would roll out in 15 new countries, and enable users to workout or meditate with friends through its SharePlay function.
  • In 2020, it made $13.54 billion in gaming from its 30% developer fee on App Store downloads and in-app purchases, according to analyst Sensor Tower.
  • The NFL is reportedly hoping that Apple makes a strong bid for its “NFL Sunday Ticket” package, which could cost as much as $2.5 billion.

Apple ended its fiscal year with $297.4 billion in revenue, up 34.7% from the previous year.

The company’s stock slipped around 5% in after hours trading, as analysts were expecting $84.9 billion in quarterly revenue.

Fanatics Launches Global Olympic Shop

Paris 2024/Design: Alex Brooks

After venturing into several new industries over the past year, Fanatics is getting back to its roots with a new e-commerce deal with the International Olympic Committee.

The partnership creates the first-ever global e-commerce platform for the Olympics and runs from Paris 2024 through the 2028 Games in Los Angeles. China has a separate e-commerce agreement with Alibaba for the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing.

The shop is live in several countries with plans for it to be rolled out in more by next summer. Fanatics already has e-commerce rights to Team USA merchandise.

  • The 2020 Olympics were projected to generate $100 million from licensed product sales.
  • The 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City brought in $500 million in gross retail sales.

Fanatics debuted items for the 2024 Paris Olympics alongside the announcement. The company has also secured rights to make and sell Olympic rings.

The global deal adds to Fanatics’ aggressive expansion. Its NFT company is valued at $1.5 billion, and its trading card company is valued at $10.4 billion.

Fanatics, valued at $18 billion in August, estimates it will surpass $3 billion in sales this year.

Amazon Generates $110.8B, Falls Short of Expectations

Amazon Games/Design: Alex Brooks

Amazon generated $110.81 billion in revenue in the third quarter, missing Wall Street estimates of $111.6 billion.

The company faced a number of the supply chain issues plaguing industries worldwide and increased competition from consumers returning to brick-and-mortar stores.

CEO Andy Jassy has said that gaming could become the entertainment industry’s largest category and Amazon highlighted its growth in the category in its quarterly report.

  • The company released the PC title “New World” on Sept. 28 for $40.
  • The game became the highest-played new title this year on Steam.
  • During its launch week, “New World” was the most-watched game on Twitch.

The retail and tech giant bought Twitch, a gaming-focused streaming platform, in 2014 for around $1 billion. Twitch generated roughly $2.3 billion in revenue last year.

Amazon also has Prime Gaming. Earlier this month, the service announced partnership with Riot Games, the developer behind the massively popular “League of Legends.”

Amazon plans to alleviate the logistical challenges it faced in Q3 by hiring 275,000 permanent and seasonal employees ahead of the holiday season.

The company expects between $130 billion and $140 billion in sales during Q4.

WNBA Star Alana Beard Leads Effort For Oakland Team

USA TODAY NETWORK/Design: Alex Brooks

A WNBA expansion team could be coming to Oakland through an investor group led by retired player Alana Beard.

The WNBA champion is partnering with the African American Sports and Entertainment Group, an organization reportedly seeking a 50% stake in the Oakland Coliseum Complex. Oakland’s Vice Mayor Rebecca Kaplan has been supportive of the process.

It’s not clear how much a new team would cost, but bankers estimated that the 2019 sale of the New York Liberty was in the $10 million to $14 million range.

Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has previously voiced her interest in building a league larger than the current 12 teams.

  • The 2021 regular season was the most-viewed WNBA season since 2008. Viewership increased 51% compared to 2020.
  • In May, Google joined Nike, Deloitte, and AT&T as a WNBA Changemaker.
  • That same month, Amazon purchased exclusive streaming rights to 16 WNBA games in a multiyear deal.

Charlotte, Houston, Toronto, and Philadelphia have all been identified as potential expansion cities. Natasha Cloud, Mystics point guard and Athletes Unlimited signee, said she’s trying her hardest to “bring a team back to Philly.”

Former Atlanta Dream star Renee Montgomery became the first former player to co-own a WNBA team in March.
