Super Bowl May Drive $477M Impact for L.A.

The Super Bowl is expected to bring a swell of economic activity to the Los Angeles area when it comes to SoFi stadium in February.

The Los Angeles Super Bowl Host Committee released an extensive report estimating the game’s overall economic impact to be between $234 million and $477 million.

  • The report estimated that the game would bring 2,200 to 4,700 new jobs to the L.A. region, primarily in transportation, hotels and motels, restaurants, and personal care.
  • A projected 100,000 to 150,000 out-of-towners will come to the area, staying an average of four days.
  • Short-term lodging and other “direct” impacts of the game could account for as much as $258.5 million of the total impact.

The $5 billion SoFi Stadium, home to the Los Angeles Chargers and Rams, opened in September 2020. SoFi won the naming rights in a 20-year, $400 million deal.

SoFi, situated in the Hollywood Park entertainment complex and planned neighborhood, follows a trend of stadiums surrounded by dining and entertainment options in similarly inclusive complexes.

The neighboring YouTube Theater concert hall opened in August. The area is also home to the NFL’s West Coast offices.

Construction on the Intuit Dome, future home of the Los Angeles Clippers, began across the street from SoFi Stadium in September.

Advent Eyeing Stake in French Soccer League’s Media Entity

Private equity firm Advent International is reportedly considering purchasing a stake in a media rights company being formed by France’s Ligue de Football Professionnel.

Advent is apparently among a number of investors interested as the league searches for a financial partner. The LFP presented the project to clubs this week, and discussions among the teams about whether to go forward will take place until mid-January.

The league would be looking for an investment of around $1.7 billion for 10% of the media company.

  • The discussions come after France’s National Assembly voted to allow professional sports leagues to create commercial entities and sell stakes to external investors in March.
  • Leagues will be required to control at least 80% of voting and economic rights in the entities.

The LFP has weathered a number of recent financial struggles. Ligue 1, for example, is missing income from its terminated $1.2 billion per-year broadcasting deal with Mediapro.

Last October, Italy’s Serie A agreed to enter exclusive talks with a consortium including Advent International to purchase a 10% stake in the league’s new media business division for $2 billion.

The Serie A deal had been repeatedly postponed as it needs approval from at least 14 of the league’s 20 teams. The discussions were revived in September.

DraftKings to Take Governance Role in Blockchain Network

DraftKings/Design: Alex Brooks

Many sports-related companies are dabbling in blockchain products, but DraftKings is going a layer deeper.

The sports betting giant is working to become a validator on the Ethereum-based Polygon network, meaning it will help maintain the blockchain-based infrastructure of the network and facilitate transactions.

The partnership will also give DraftKings a governance role within the Polygon network, which streamlines operations that utilize Ethereum, including the creation of NFTs.

Polygon’s existing partners include legacy game maker Atari, NFT platform OpenSea, and virtual world creator Decentraland.

  • DraftKings has already staked out territory in the growing NFT space.
  • It distributes the digital collectibles for Tom Brady’s Autograph platform.

DraftKings has made substantial moves this year, acquiring Golden Nugget Online Gaming in August for $1.6 billion, and investing in the SPAC preparing to take Vivid Seats public.

Last week, Drive by DraftKings, a venture firm backed by the company, announced a $60 million fundraise which included investments from Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots owners Jerry Jones and Robert Kraft.

The biggest move could still be on the horizon: Last week, DraftKings and Entain extended their negotiating window, following a $22.4 billion bid for the British gambling operator made by DraftKings in September.
