Tommy Fleetwood Ends Drought, Wins $10M at Tour Championship

Tommy Fleetwood finally broke the curse—and it came with a premium prize.

The 34-year-old won the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta on Sunday, the first PGA Tour win of his 15-year pro career.

The Englishman walked away with $10 million by winning the Tour finale. Fleetwood’s career earnings are now at nearly $60 million as the PGA Tour considered the Tour Championship’s $40 million purse as “official money” this year for the first time since 2018.

Entering the weekend’s tournament, Fleetwood had 44 top-10 and 30 top-5 PGA Tour finishes in his career, but had yet to win a single tournament.

The drought was exacerbated after a loss at the Travelers Championship in June. Fleetwood held a one-stroke lead entering the final hole over Keegan Bradley. However, Bradley walked away from the 72nd hole with an outright win following a birdie and a Fleetwood bogey.

Fleetwood had another chance at the St. Jude Championship as he entered the final round with the lead, but finished in a tie for third.

Following the win Sunday, Fleetwood acknowledged that despite a three-stroke lead entering the final few holes, he “wasn’t the most comfortable” due to what had happened in past tournaments.

“When you’ve lost it so many times, three-shot lead down the last [hole] doesn’t feel like that many,” Fleetwood told NBC.

He managed to hold it together to get the win—which he hopes will lead to more down the line.

“This is just hopefully one win. The first of many to come. You can’t win plenty if you don’t win the first one,” Fleetwood said.

As the final round started, several had come out in support of Fleetwood, including LeBron James and Caitlin Clark. James even congratulated Fleetwood after the win, while Clark described his breakthrough as “awesome.”

Congrats and 🫡 @TommyFleetwood1!!! That first one feeling is something else! Especially after dealing with adversity and shortcomings. Too 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🏆

— LeBron James (@KingJames) August 24, 2025

Fleetwood certainly benefited from the rule changes at the Tour Championship this year. In previous years, the tournament offered a stroke advantage based on the FedExCup standings. That would have put No. 1-ranked Scottie Scheffler at -10 to start the tournament, five strokes better than where Fleetwood would’ve started.

Scheffler finished at -14 on Sunday, four strokes behind Fleetwood.

Bill Belichick Tells UNC Football Team Hulu Series Is Happening

The Fayetteville Observer

The North Carolina football docuseries is finally officially official.

UNC announced the series on its social handles Sunday, a couple hours after head coach Bill Belichick informed his team about it, a source told Front Office Sports. Cameras had already been filming team practices prior to the formal announcement.

FOS reported last month that the Hulu series was nearing finalization.

A previously planned collaboration with HBO’s Hard Knocks: Offseason fell through at the 11th hour, reportedly due to a couple of factors. ProFootballTalk founder Mike Florio reported NFL owners put the kibosh on NFL Films being part of the project over Belichick animus, while The Athletic reported the deal broke down over creative concerns involving Belichick’s girlfriend Jordon Hudson, who also serves as a business and marketing consigliere for the coach.

Saturday night, Hudson appeared to hint at the finalization of the new project when she posted a photo with Belichick to her Instagram story set to Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do.” She also posted a video showing cameras at Tar Heel football practice before deleting it.

The Hulu docuseries is being produced by EverWonder Studio. Everwonder declined to comment beyond confirming the school’s announcement. Hulu and UNC did not respond to a request for comment. (RedBird IMI is the primary investor in both EverWonder and Front Office Sports.)

There is much intrigue about how Belichick, who won eight Super Bowls in the NFL (six as head coach of the Patriots, two as defensive coordinator under Bill Parcells with the Giants), will adapt to the college game.

A vast majority of North Carolina’s games will air on ESPN; ESPN and Hulu are both part of Disney, and there’s currently a bundle for the launch of ESPN’s direct-to-consumer streaming service that also includes Hulu and Disney+ at an introductory price of $29.99 a month.

EVENT

The biggest names in sports media will be at Tuned In, Sept. 16 in NYC.

The roster includes Adam Silver, Rob Manfred, Kim Ng, Jimmy Pitaro, Maria Taylor, Ian and Noah Eagle, Jay Marine, Eric Shanks, Luis Silberwasser, a debate between Stephen A. Smith and Clay Travis, and more.

US Open Stretches Schedule to 15 Days, but Players Aren’t Happy

Robert Deutsch-Imagn Images

For two decades, one of the biggest certainties in tennis was that one of the Big Three—Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal—was going to walk out of a Grand Slam as champion. But with two of the three retired and Djokovic entering his twilight, perhaps the more sustainable certainty is the disagreements between tennis players and tournament organizers on the schedule.

There’s a wide range of schedule disagreements, from the timing of matches at the French Open to the required number of tournaments in any given year. The 2025 US Open, the year’s final Grand Slam on the calendar, is no different.

This is the first time that the US Open has begun on a Sunday instead of Monday. It’s also the third Grand Slam to move to a Sunday start, as the French Open led the way in 2006, followed by the Australian Open last year.

Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam remaining that still starts on a Monday.

The logic from the US Open organizers is clear: The event now runs for 15 days instead of 14, allowing for additional ticket sales—a year after it broke its attendance record. It also adds an extra weekend day that could boost ratings, even for Round 1 matches, especially with the NFL Week 3 preseason games done by Saturday this year.

But the players are not exactly happy with the change.

“I’m not really for it. I don’t think a lot of the players were for it, especially those who play the week before a Slam,” world No. 4 women’s player Jessica Pegula said.

Both Pegula and fellow American star Frances Tiafoe said that they understand the reasoning is related to extra ticket sales. Pegula added that players often voice their complaints to organizers, but “they don’t listen to anything we say.”

The US Open starts more than a month after the end of Wimbledon, the closest Grand Slam on the calendar. But there are several top-tier tournaments in between, including 1000-level events like the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open, and the lone combined 500-level tournament, the DC Open.

The US Open starts less than a week after the final of the Cincinnati Open, a combined 1000-level event. Carlos Alcaraz, the defending US Open men’s singles champion, won the Cincinnati Open on Monday—then competed in the US Open Mixed Doubles championship the next day in New York City.

While the schedule is an issue, the players have no complaints about the US Open’s growing prize money. This year’s purse is $85 million—the largest of any Grand Slam—with the men’s and women’s singles champions taking $5 million each.

STATUS REPORT

One Up, Two Down, One Push

Akron Beacon Journal

Browns ⬆⬇ According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Cleveland released Tyler Huntley, but will still keep four quarterbacks on its 53-man roster: Week 1 starter Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. Carrying four signal-callers means depth will be thinner elsewhere.

NWSL ⬆ Bay FC set a league attendance record Saturday as 40,091 fans watched its match against the Washington Spirit in Oracle Park. The match—which also broke the record for largest crowd in any women’s pro league event in the U.S.—drew nearly three times the team’s average at PayPal Park, its usual home stadium.

Stanford ⬇ The Andrew Luck (GM) and John Donahoe (AD) era started off with a loss for Cardinal football. Stanford fell, 23–20, to Hawaii in Honolulu on Saturday following a 38-yard field goal as time expired.

NFL ⬇ A green dildo was thrown on the field during Friday’s preseason game between the Vikings and Titans in Nashville. While these incidents have occurred in the NFL before, the incident may be linked to multiple cases of green dildos thrown at WNBA games over the past month, many of which were tied to a crypto group.

ONE BIG FIG

Most Valuable Card

Anne Ryan-USA TODAY NETWORK

$12.9 million

Price a 1-of-1 sports card signed by NBA legends Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant sold for Saturday, according to Heritage Auctions.

It’s the most expensive sale of any sports card, breaking the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card that sold for $12.6 million in August 2022, per ESPN. It’s also the second-most-expensive sports collectible ever, behind the 1932 Babe Ruth “called shot” World Series jersey, which sold for $24.12 million last year.
