Univision to Launch Global Streaming Service

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports/Design: Alex Brooks

The largest offering of Spanish-language content is coming — and bringing live sports with it.

Just months after Univision announced plans to acquire Televisa at a value of $4.8 billion, the Spanish-language TV network unveiled the planned launch of a streaming service in 2022.

Adding to its 61 television stations and 58 radio stations in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, Univision will offer both ad-supported and premium subscription-based streaming options in the U.S. and Latin America.

Specific details surrounding the service will not be released until the Televisa merger is closed later this year. Televisa invested $1.2 billion in 2010 for a 5% stake in Univision, and after a string of investments, the company will see its stake grow from 36% to 45% in the new deal.

PrendeTV, Univision’s existing ad-supported streaming service, as well as its VIX and Univision NOW streaming services, will be housed within the new service and anchor the ad-supported tier.

Univision’s sports division merged with Televisa’s in 2019. The company voiced plans in Monday’s announcement to expand its sports offering from its existing deals.

  • Covers Copa America, the Mexican League, Copa MX, and Liga MX
  • Holds partnerships with NFL and MLB teams
  • Signed a five-year deal with Hispanic mixed martial arts franchise Combate Americas

In May, Univision reported a $66 million profit for Q1 2021, more than six times the amount reported the year prior. It attributed its 7% quarterly increase in revenue to growth in national advertising.

SCOTUS Slams NCAA in Pro-Athlete Alston Ruling

Design: Alex Brooks

The Supreme Court ruled unanimously in favor of college athletes on Monday in the case NCAA v. Alston, with Justice Neil Gorsuch writing the main opinion.

The ruling found that the NCAA violated antitrust law by limiting the amount of “non-cash education-related benefits” schools can offer FBS football and basketball players.

NCAA v. Alston was originally brought in 2014 by a plaintiff class led by former West Virginia University running back Shawne Alston.

  • The ruling itself centers narrowly on non-cash benefits and goes deep into the nitty-gritty of antitrust law.
  • It has several broader implications for the future of amateurism.

Gorsuch’s opinion poked a hole in one of the NCAA’s main legal defenses, which it has used for decades. The door is now open for athletes to challenge amateurism in court in the future.

The ruling also suggests that future rules governing name, image, and likeness could violate antitrust law if they’re too strict.

Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote a searing concurring opinion, saying “the NCAA’s business model would be flatly illegal in almost any other industry in America.”

The NCAA responded with a statement: “While today’s decision preserves the lower court ruling, it also reaffirms the NCAA’s authority to adopt reasonable rules and repeatedly notes that the NCAA remains free to articulate what are and are not truly educational benefits, consistent with the NCAA’s mission to support student-athletes.”

Jeffrey Kessler, lawyer for the plaintiffs, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Read details about the decision here and subscribe to FOS College, a free newsletter, for more.

Trio of Star Athletes Invest in Las Vegas NLL Team

Allan Henry-USA TODAY Sports/Design: Alex Brooks

Sports in Las Vegas are expanding almost as quickly as the National Lacrosse League.

Sin City’s future NLL team, which will join the league in 2022, announced on Monday that Wayne Gretzky, Dustin Johnson, and Steve Nash are joining Brooklyn Nets and New York Liberty owner Joseph Tsai as investors.

  • Nash, the Nets’ coach, is a co-owner of MLS’ Vancouver Whitecaps.
  • Gretzky previously owned 10% of the Phoenix Coyotes. He was an Edmonton Oilers  partner and executive from 2016 to May of this year, when he stepped down and signed a multiyear pact with Turner Sports to become a TV analyst.
  • Johnson, Gretzky’s son-in-law, made $44.5 million over the 12 months ending June 4 in golf tournament winnings and sponsorships. This is his first foray into team ownership.

Tsai — who is also an investor in the Premier Lacrosse League along with New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft — paid around $10 million to launch the Las Vegas franchise, including the expansion fee and operational runway.

The NLL has added teams in New York, Philadelphia, San Diego, and Halifax since 2019. The latest team continues Las Vegas’ growth as a sports city.

  • Since 2017, it has added the NHL’s Las Vegas Golden Knights and the WNBA’s Aces, who will share Michelob ULTRA Arena with the NLL team.
  • The NFL’s Raiders moved to the city from Oakland in 2020.

Vegas is also viewed as a viable destination for MLS expansion and MLB relocation.
