First Up

  • San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York was arrested in Ohio over the weekend, court records show. He pleaded no contest to charges including disorderly conduct.
  • The Astros have “mutually agreed to part ways” with GM Dana Brown, while owner Jim Crane appointed himself as the team’s interim lead for baseball operations.
  • The Browns decided that Deshaun Watson, who missed all of last season due to an injury, will start the team’s season opener Sept. 13 at Jacksonville.
  • LIV Golf concluded its roller-coaster 2026 season Sunday with no clarity regarding if or when the league will return for a sixth year in 2027.

Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White are not eligible to play in the WNBA, league sources tell Front Office Sports.

In recent weeks, Freedom and White, two former NBA players, both declared their intention to enter the 2027 WNBA draft, claiming they identify as women. A league source called the recent declarations of the two men “simply publicity stunts” and said that the league is “not going to give oxygen to efforts designed to mock the league or use this topic to demean and marginalize others.”

League sources also say that the WNBA does not have any legitimate and immediate eligibility matters that require action. The league will continue to discuss the topic, but it “will not allow outside pressure or manufactured controversy to dictate league processes,” the source said.

The WNBA’s eligibility rules are collectively bargained. The league’s new collective bargaining agreement has one line regarding gender eligibility, in Article XIII Section 1 (a), which reads: “Only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA.” The CBA does not include any language around gender identity or gender assigned at birth.

On Sunday, Freedom attended the Indiana Fever–Chicago Sky game in Chicago and sat courtside. In the third quarter, Freedom had a verbal altercation with Sky guard Natasha Cloud.

Cloud appeared to shout toward the baseline where Freedom was seated. Freedom stood up and raised his arms before he was immediately restrained by security and removed from the arena.

Minutes afterward, Freedom was surrounded by security in the landing area. “I’m supporting women, and that is the reason they are kicking me out. That’s unacceptable,” Freedom, 34, told security, as witnessed by FOS.

Cloud did not speak to the media after the game, but a Sky spokesperson told FOS afterward that the 11-year WNBA veteran spoke to league and team security.

It’s not immediately clear whether Freedom is allowed to return to WNBA arenas.

$1.15 million

That’s how much No. 21–seeded Arthur Fils took home after beating American Frances Tiafoe in three sets during the men’s final of the Cincinnati Open on Sunday. It was the 22-year-old’s first Masters 1000 title, as he became just the second French player to win the tournament. After winning, Fils is now ranked world No. 11.

Tiafoe claimed $612,340 in earnings as the tournament’s runner-up. Fils goes into next week’s US Open having never advanced past the second round. His best Grand Slam finish was at Wimbledon in 2024, when he lost to Alex de Minaur in the fourth round.

“Do I like anything about it? Absolutely not. But we gotta do what’s right for Ohio State.”

—Ohio State football coach Ryan Day at a press conference Monday as the team begins its fourth week of fall camp when asked about the prospect of NFL rookies playing in college. Former Ole Miss tight end Dae’Quan Wright was waived by the Browns over the weekend, with reports emerging that he will join LSU. If he does, Wright is believed to be the first player to return to college after playing in the NFL. Wright signed with the Eagles after the 2026 NFL Draft, and then was claimed off waivers by Cleveland this month. Day, who won his first CFP national championship with Ohio State in 2025, said if players are getting cut from NFL rosters and are going to be on other college teams, “we have to at least consider it and look at it.”

“The conferences have to decide if there’s a point where their rosters have to be locked in. Because once some of these guys become available, adding them to the roster is going to provide advantage for certain teams,” Day said.

Gianni Infantino ⬇  UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin says he won’t run against FIFA president Gianni Infantino but warned that the embattled head of world soccer must either quit or face a leadership challenge in March. Čeferin has led UEFA’s stance against FIFA’s plan to sell stakes in the World Cup to private equity investors, which was scrapped amid widespread opposition at the start of August. Infantino has come under increasing pressure to step down. “I think this plan is even worse than the Super League plan,” he said on the British podcast The Rest Is Politics: Leading. To oust the FIFA leader, the anti-Infantino bloc will need 106 votes in support of a to-be-named opponent.

PGA Tour Charities ⬆ Former PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem and his wife, Holly, have donated $13 million to the golf circuit’s philanthropic arm, which is changing alongside the PGA Tour’s overall structural shift in 2028. The PGA Tour has always been a 501(c)(6) tax-exempt nonprofit organization, but in 2024 created a separate for-profit entity, PGA Tour Enterprises, in which the private capital firm Strategic Sports Group invested $1.5 billion. An announcement from the PGA Tour on Monday said Finchem’s donation will help launch a “reimagined philanthropic strategy to accompany the new structure” of the tour.

“Hand of God” ball ⬆⬇ The famous Diego Maradona ball sold for $3.35 million at auction over the weekend. Despite its global renown, the Adidas Azteca ball fell short of estimates—Heritage Auctions estimated the ball would go for $10 million and the starting price was set at $2.5 million. Maradona’s shirt from the same game sold in 2022 for just under $9.3 million at Sotheby’s. Maradona scored in the 51st and 55th minutes of Argentina’s 2–1 victory over England in the quarterfinals of the 1986 World Cup.

Vuelta ⬇  The third stage of the three-week cycling race primarily in Spain ended without a winner because of hail Monday. A severe hailstorm hit as riders climbed the Col de Mont-Louis with around 9 miles to go of the 108-mile ride from Gruissan to Font-Romeu in the French Pyrenees. Conditions became dangerous with ice on the road and riders taking cover in shops along the road. Tadej Pogačar, the Tour de France winner seeking a sweep of the Grand Tour races, remained the race leader after three stages.
