PGA Tour, Cadillac Back at Trump Doral After a Decade Away

A decade after the PGA Tour’s departure from Trump National Doral, its return to the famed course in 2026 is looking more and more like its former presence in South Florida.

The revived tournament—at one of the many courses around the world owned by U.S. President Donald Trump—will be called the Cadillac Championship, set to be played April 30 to May 3. The General Motors–owned luxury car brand has agreed to a multiyear deal that will see it pay north of $20 million annually to once again have its name on the event.

From 2011 to 2016, the PGA Tour event at Doral was called the WGC-Cadillac Championship, part of a series of the former World Golf Championships, which offered elevated purses for elite player fields (the WGCs ceased operations after 2021). The Trump Organization bought the former Doral Golf Resort & Spa out of bankruptcy in 2012 for $150 million.

After the 2016 edition, Cadillac opted not to renew its tournament sponsorship and the PGA Tour decided to move that WGC event from Doral to Mexico City, where it was played from 2017 to 2020.

The move away from Doral was announced in June, as Trump emerged as the 2016 Republican presidential nominee. At the time, former PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said the move was due to the inability to find a new title sponsor at Doral, not because of controversy surrounding Trump. Cadillac never explicitly cited Trump’s ownership of the course as a reason for not renewing its sponsorship.

The new Cadillac Championship, which will not carry over tournament records and historical stats from the former Doral tournament, is one of eight signature events on the PGA Tour in 2026, which will pay out $20 million purses to limited, exclusive fields. Tournament title sponsors typically fund the prize money plus some other costs.

PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp, in Monday’s announcement of the news, called the return to Doral “a new era” for the circuit in Miami. He said Cadillac is “synonymous with Trump National Doral, a legacy venue on our schedule.” Trump Organization EVP Eric Trump called Cadillac “an iconic brand and a longtime friend.”

Doral hosted LIV Golf events from 2022 to 2025, but it will not host one next year. Trump’s relationship with the PGA Tour has continued to improve this year. He hosted a meeting at the White House in February with PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan, Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan, and Tiger Woods, as the parties attempted to solve the divide in men’s professional golf.

Trump Clashes With Nonprofit Over Future of D.C. Golf Courses

Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images

U.S. President Donald Trump is at odds with a Washington, D.C., nonprofit entrusted with renovating three public golf courses in the nation’s capital.

Last month, a White House adviser told Front Office Sports that Tiger Woods had agreed to help with the renovation of Langston Golf Course—one of three public golf courses (alongside Rock Creek Park Golf and East Potomac Golf Links) in D.C. owned by the National Park Service, which in 2020 handed over operations of the courses to the National Links Trust (NLT), a nonprofit created in 2019, as part of a 50-year lease.

The NLT released a statement late Friday night responding to comments Trump made to The Wall Street Journal about the discord, alleging that the organization violated a lease provision, and that the courses could soon revert to the Trump Administration’s control.

“National Links Trust appreciates the President’s interest in the DC golf courses and looks forward to the opportunity to partner with the administration to improve these historically significant facilities,” the statement read. “We respectfully disagree with the characterization that we are in default of our lease. In the five years since signing the lease, National Links Trust has worked hand in hand with the National Park Service through the extensive permitting and compliance processes required for these comprehensive renovation projects.”

The NLT currently reports to the U.S. Department of the Interior, and in 2024, launched the Nation’s Capital Project, which seeks to revitalize and rehabilitate those three historic municipal golf courses. Famed golf architects Gil Hanse (Rock Creek), Beau Welling (Langston), and Tom Doak (East Potomac) have all signed on to provide pro-bono architectural services.

The Rock Creek project likely won’t be finished until 2027, and it has an estimated cost between $25 million and $35 million.

But the East Potomac Golf Links, which run along the Potomac River and have views of the Washington Monument, are what Trump is targeting. One idea is building a new course entirely on that site designed by Tom Fazio and calling it Washington National Golf Course, per the WSJ.

In October, debris from the White House’s $300 million East Wing renovation project was transported to East Potomac Golf Links.

While any Trump involvement in the D.C. golf courses would be on a government level, Trump Golf owns and operates 16 golf courses across the world.

The PGA Tour is returning to Trump National Doral next year, and Trump Turnberry in Scotland remains under consideration for hosting another future edition of the Open Championship.

Once-Enticing NFL Christmas Day Lineup on Netflix, Amazon Falls Flat

Kevin Jairaj-Imagn Images

Just as Amazon is having its Christmas dreams dashed, so, too, is Netflix.

The Cowboys lost to the Vikings on Sunday Night Football, 34–26, reducing their playoff chances to less than 1% and further reducing the appeal of a forthcoming Christmas Day game on Netflix. The streaming giant rolled out in May what was thought then to be a blockbuster doubleheader for the holiday, including Dallas and division rival Washington, followed by an NFC North clash between the Lions and Vikings.

At the time, the Commanders were fresh off a trip to the NFC championship game, marking their best season in more than 30 years, while the Lions and Vikings were also playoff teams that had just drawn a big audience for the finale of the 2024 NFL regular season.

Now, those upcoming holiday games aren’t remotely as attractive. The 4–10 Commanders and 6–8 Vikings have already been eliminated from playoff contention, with both teams hit hard this year by injuries. The 6-7-1 Cowboys have only a slim possibility of claiming the NFC East division title, while the 8–6 Lions are 1.5 games out of the final NFC playoff slot.

The Netflix situation mirrors that of streaming rival Amazon, which will show a newly created Christmas night showcase with the Broncos and Chiefs. Kansas City, however, was eliminated from playoff contention Sunday, and star quarterback Patrick Mahomes sustained a season-ending knee injury, tearing an anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

The reduced appeal for all three Christmas games next week suggests that the current NFL streaming record could remain safe, and that the league’s dominance on Thanksgiving won’t extend fully to another holiday. That streaming mark was set during last year’s Christmas games on Netflix, which averaged more than 24 million viewers. YouTube also had eyes on breaking that record during Week 1 of the 2025 season with its presentation of a Chiefs-Chargers game from Brazil, but averaged just 19.7 million viewers and did not use an accredited method to measure its viewership.

Loading Up

Despite the diminished appeal for the NFL’s Christmas tripleheader, both Netflix and Amazon are building up their production and talent, and they will give the games their full treatment.

Netflix revealed last week the full team of talent that will join the father-son announcing duo of Ian and Noah Eagle at the games. The two Eagles, also headliners at September’s Front Office Sports Tuned In summit, will be the play-by-play announcers for the two games, with Ian Eagle in Washington for Cowboys-Commanders, and Noah Eagle in Minnesota for Lions-Vikings.

They will be joined by an extensive array of game and rules analysts, sideline reporters, and special guests, including NFL RedZone’s Scott Hanson, CBS Sports’s Nate Burleson and Matt Ryan, and Fox Sports’s Drew Brees, among many others. Brees is a rare entrant in the lineup from Fox or ESPN, which resisted lending its talent to Netflix.

Amazon, meanwhile, will have its full Thursday Night Football crew involved for Broncos-Chiefs, one that just set a regular-season viewership record on Prime Video.

What Does the End of the Chiefs Dynasty Mean for NFL?

FOS illustration

For the first time since 2014, the defending AFC champion Chiefs will miss the playoffs, a run that included three Super Bowl wins, five conference titles, and seven straight trips to the AFC championship game. And to make matters worse, Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL, leaving some of next season in doubt. FOS newsletter writer Eric Fisher explains how the Chiefs’ remaining primetime games, including Amazon Prime Video’s first Christmas Day game against the Broncos, could lose its shine and whether this is the end of the legendary dynasty.

Meanwhile, Dec. 15 marks the unofficial start of the NBA trade season, where players who signed contracts over the summer can be officially dealt. FOS reporter Colin Salao breaks down whether we will get a flurry of activity this week and whether we will get answers to where players like Chris Paul or even Giannis Antetokounmpo could be headed.

And the Big 12 is approaching a potential $500 million private-capital agreement with RedBird Capital Partners and Weatherford Capital, just days after conference member the University of Utah’s own private-equity deal opened the door for other schools to mimic. Asset Class author Ben Horney has the latest. (Editors’ note: RedBird IMI, of which RedBird Capital Partners is a joint venture partner, is the primary owner of Front Office Sports.)

STATUS REPORT

Two Up, One Down, One Push

Nov 29, 2025; Knoxville, Tennessee, USA; Vanderbilt Commodores quarterback Diego Pavia (2) looks to pass against the Tennessee Volunteers during the first half at Neyland Stadium.

Randy Sartin-Imagn Images

Diego Pavia ⬆⬇ The Vanderbilt quarterback apologized for his social media comments after finishing second in Heisman Trophy voting to Indiana signal-caller Fernando Mendoza. Pavia posted an Instagram message after the ceremony that read in part, “F-ALL THE VOTERS, BUT … FAMILY FOR LIFE,” but later said in another post, “To be so close to my dream and come up short was painful. I didn’t handle those emotions well at all and did not represent myself the way I wanted to. .. It was a mistake, and I am sorry.” Pavia plans to play for the Commodores in the team’s Dec. 31 ReliaQuest Bowl against Iowa.

NHL uniforms ⬆ The league is advancing efforts to have more color-on-color games with neither team wearing white jerseys, according to multiple reports, building on current protocols that generally limit such matchups to special events such as outdoor games or anniversary contests. The NHL Board of Governors last week heard a presentation about expanding permissions for color-on-color games. There is an obvious sales link to this, as the majority of NHL jersey sales are for ones in dark colors. The league, however, is also looking to maintain safeguards for appropriate color contrasts, as well as travel and sponsorship considerations.

Broncos and Rams ⬆ Denver and Los Angeles on Sunday became the first two NFL teams to clinch playoff berths this season. The Broncos won their 11th straight game, beating the Packers 34–26 to improve to 12–2. The Rams defeated the Lions 41–34 and are now 11–3.

Florida ⬇ Gators quarterback DJ Lagway announced Monday that he will enter the transfer portal next month. A former five-star recruit, Lagway signed with Florida in 2024 under former head coach Billy Napier, who was fired in October. The 20-year-old is a rising junior and will likely command an expensive NIL (name, image, and likeness) and revenue-sharing package.
