How UOnline Helped A Young Sports Professional Advance His Career

Front Office Sports is proud to share the stories of UOnline alumni who have elevated their sports career by earning a graduate degree through the school’s online MSED in Sport Administration program.

Dean Seda is the Health and Wellness Director at the Red Bank Family YMCA in New Jersey as well as a member of the New York Red Bulls Event Marketing Staff. Seda earned a Master of Education in Sport Administration from the University of Miami’s UOnline program graduating in 2018.

After completing his bachelor’s degree at Rutgers University in 2012, Seda went on to earn certification as a personal trainer and corrective exercise specialist and worked for a variety of fitness and wellness centers in his home state. Seda rose to this current role at the Red Bank Family YMCA in April of 2018.

Just prior to this, Seda decided on pursuing his graduate degree through Miami in order to advance his career even further. 

“Their curriculum seemed to fit a lot of my criteria,” Seda says of UOnline. “The course content really appealed to me and I also liked the pace of the classes being every seven weeks, one class at a time. So I knew that my focus was only on one class with a pretty rapid pace. I enjoyed that from start to finish of the program.”

Already armed with strong base knowledge of the sports and wellness world, Seda looked to grow his knowledge of the business and marketing aspects of the industry. Seda believes the program allowed him to grow in this aspect at his current role and also helped prepare him for future roles in sports.

“Having courses specifically for sponsorships, marketing, communications and globalization of sport stuck out to me as topics of interest,” Seda states. “I was glad to take courses that delved further into those topics specifically. In my position now, that knowledge allows me to communicate and get points across more effectively in a variety of contexts. I think I’m able to make better decisions as a leader as well. We spoke a lot about morals and values of an organization aligning with personal values and how that goes into decision making. That’s been a big help for me.”

Seda’s goal is to one day land a full-time role on the marketing and communications side of the sports industry.

“I just want to be a part of doing something creative and dynamic, whether it’s being that voice for an organization communicating values and policies or communicating the value of a team that I’m working for and the benefits of being a stakeholder in the team,” Seda says. “Positions like marketing director and communications/public relations director are pretty appealing for me.”

For future graduate students, Seda recommends properly considering researching what they really want out of the educational experience. The UOnline program served Seda in providing him with many of the tools necessary to achieve his professional goals.

“If you’re interested in what you’re learning about it, it makes the pursuit more enjoyable and more valuable,” he states. “I think the University of Miami’s master’s curriculum is great. It was really engaging. I was really interested in all the assignments, the professors were engaged, and I connected with some great people from around the country.”
