The Brewers and Rays became the first two teams in 2026 to secure MLB playoff spots over the weekend, despite both hailing from the bottom half of the league in payroll. Their winning seasons add a new data point to an ongoing fight between the league and the union over whether a salary cap is necessary to make MLB more competitive.

The number of unique game scores in NFL history after the Bears’ 59–37 Week 1 win over the Panthers represented the first “Scorigami” of the 2026 season. After stalwart defensive play and early sloppiness highlighted some of the other initial games of the new league season, Chicago and Carolina erupted for 13 combined touchdowns. The 96 combined points in the game set an NFL record for a Week 1 contest. The latest Scorigami also happened after Chicago last week introduced Bearigami, a franchise-specific accounting of unique game scores in its history.

—U.S. basketball star Breanna Stewart after the Americans claimed their 12th FIBA Women’s World Cup, and a fifth consecutive, with a 97–79 victory over France on Sunday in the 2026 tournament final. Led by Stewart’s 22 points and 10 rebounds, Team USA pulled away during the second half of the championship game, having trailed by two points at the half. The game was a rematch of the 2024 Olympics final, in which the U.S. narrowly defeated Les Bleus 67–66.

With the World Cup over, attention will turn back to the WNBA, which has been on pause since August 30. Each team has just four games remaining, with the playoffs starting Sept. 27. Apart from the U.S., which rostered 12 WNBA players, France had the most current WNBA players of any country, with eight—including WNBA All-Stars Dominique Malonga and Gabby Williams of the Storm and Valkyries, respectively.
