Last week, Florida State president Richard McCullough apologized to fans for subpar on-field results. On Sunday, the school did something about it, firing head football coach Mike Norvell. Norvell, who started the season on the hot seat after consecutive losing seasons, sputtered to a 3–5 start. Now the Seminoles owe Norvell the roughly $50 million remaining on his contract.

First Up

  • Lamar Jackson may miss the rest of the season, dealing a blow to the two-time MVP’s push to become the league’s highest-paid player once again.

  • The Vikings lost for the first time this year, ensuring no team will go undefeated for a 54th straight season—and reinforcing the NFL’s parity-based competition model.

  • Tom Brady cursed on Fox airwaves for a second time this season. The Federal Communications Commission can issue fines for on-air profanity.

  • The initial College Football Playoff rankings will be released Tuesday, with Miami, Utah, and UCLA the only remaining undefeated teams.

Following three straight losses, Florida State has decided to move on from coach Mike Norvell.

On Sunday afternoon, Florida State fired Norvell midway through his seventh season. Norvell departs from the Seminoles with a 41–39 overall record and a roughly $50 million buyout, the third-highest in college football history after Texas A&M’s Jimbo Fisher (2023, near $77 million) and LSU’s Brian Kelly (2025, $54 million). The buyout is subject to offset and mitigation, meaning the final amount can be reduced if Norvell finds another job.

On Saturday night, Florida State fell to Clemson, 36–24, moving it to 3–5 on the season. Before kickoff, a banner flew above Doak Campbell Stadium reading “Fire Mike Novell – Peter Collins.” Norvell’s name was misspelled; Collins refers to the chairman of the Florida State University Board of Trustees.

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney, who’s been under considerable pressure himself this season, took exception to the banner postgame.

“[Norvell] ain’t gonna say it, but I’ll say it. I was freaking disappointed to see that. Hell, they may be flying one around Clemson next time I’m home, but I doubt it. I doubt it. But whoever did that, man, you ought to be ashamed of yourself.”

Norvell’s dismissal follows months of speculation about his future.

Earlier in the week, school president Richard McCollough penned a letter to fans, where he stopped short of mentioning Norvell’s future but acknowledged frustration with the results.

“The standard is not negotiable,” McCullough wrote. “This is a consequential moment for Florida State. We have extraordinary tradition, a passionate national following, exceptional institutional support and the opportunity to build something worthy of the Seminole name.

“We are not asking you to lower expectations. We are telling you that we share and embrace them. We are not asking you to ignore the results. We are committed to changing them.”

On Sunday evening, McCullough described Norvell’s firing as “a very complicated decision” as well as a “big business decision.”

“I have just not seen that trajectory,” McCullough said. “And [Saturday] was a bit of a defining moment for me going forward.”

Norvell’s firing comes several weeks after athletic director Michael Alford was let go on Sept. 14. McCollough said the school had already hired Daniel Parker of Parker Associates to conduct the athletic director search. Now Parker will conduct both searches simultaneously.

“It’s top priority for us to get all of this done,” said McCullough. “You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to say ‘What happens in January? What happens in December?’ … Time is of the essence.”

Norvell was named National Coach of the Year in 2023 after leading Florida State to a 13–1 season. The Seminoles won the ACC Championship but were left out of the College Football Playoff after quarterback Jordan Travis sustained a season-ending injury. Norvell signed an eight-year, $84 million contract extension in 2024. The Seminoles have gone 10–22 since.

Florida State is set for an expensive overhaul, considering Norvell’s buyout and the cost of building a new coaching staff and recruiting players for the 2027 season. McCollough indicated that’s all been considered.

“We’ve been working on this thing for quite awhile,” McCullough said. “Working all contingencies and financial aspects. Obviously we’ll have to figure all of that out. But we’re at the point now where, you know, how can we afford not to do this?”

Turning Soccer’s Moment Into Momentum

The 2026 World Cup brought unprecedented attention to soccer across North America, but for Major League Soccer, the bigger opportunity is what comes next as the league continues to sustain historically high fan demand. With record growth across attendance, viewership, social, digital engagement, player investment, and fan acquisition, MLS is entering its next chapter with momentum that extends well beyond the tournament.

For brands, that creates an opportunity to build lasting connections with a young, diverse, and increasingly engaged fan base. Chime is among those betting on that trajectory, using its MLS partnership to connect with fans through tentpole events, player-led storytelling, community activations, and experiences designed to make the brand part of the culture surrounding the league.

Off Topić

$7.4 million

That was the price the Thunder declined to pay to pick up Nikola Topić’s option. Topić, a lottery pick in 2024, played in just 10 games in three years for Oklahoma City due to various injuries and a cancer diagnosis. He’s currently recovering from back surgery and will become a pending free agent.

The Thunder, who fell to the Spurs in the Western Conference Finals last season, have been decimated by injuries this campaign. Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace are both out indefinitely, Alex Caruso will miss time with an ankle sprain, and Chet Holmgren is due to miss several months. Oklahoma City has a 4–2 record to start the season.

“The pope doesn’t take sides.”

—Pope Leo XIV—formerly Robert Prevost—before the inaugural Eternal City Tip-Off, a men’s and women’s doubleheader in Rome to start the college basketball season Sunday. The event featured two Catholic universities, Notre Dame and Villanova, the latter of which is the pope’s alma mater. The pope joked that while the pontiff is neutral, “Prevost has another opinion.”

Event organizers had to get a waiver from the NCAA to start the season a day early so that it could coincide with All Saints’ Day. Before this season, NCAA teams were allowed to make foreign tours only once every four years. In April, the NCAA revised the rules so that teams can take one foreign trip annually. They can also now compete against professional or national teams and take additional practices to prepare.
