LIV Golf, the PGA Tour rival once bankrolled by the Saudi PIF, is on life support. The league, which filed for Chapter 11 in September after losing PIF funding, planned to emerge from bankruptcy with $300 million in financing from BC Partners Credit. Under the deal, players would hold most of the equity, and BC would own almost half of the league. But that deal is now dead, a source tells Front Office Sports.

Breaking Down an NIL Deal
NIL has created new opportunities for college athletes, but navigating this evolving landscape involves more than signing a brand deal. From understanding taxes and budgeting to planning for the future, financial education is becoming an increasingly important part of the conversation.

That’s how much Kristaps Porziņģis is reportedly losing each game he sits out for the Warriors. Porziņģis signed a two-year, $40 million contract extension with Golden State in the offseason and is due $20 million this season. But the oft-absent center left the team before training camp with a medical issue and hasn’t returned. The Warriors changed his status from “general illness” to “not with team,” meaning his absence isn’t excused. Under the league’s collective bargaining agreement, players are contracted for 91.6 games—82 during the regular season and up to 9.6 during preseason. They can therefore be fined 1/91.6th of their annual salary for every game they are away from the team.

“It’s not a job that gives you love back.”
—Atlanta Dream co-owner and former WNBA All-Star Renee Montgomery discussing the open league commissioner role. Commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced her retirement after seven years in the top job—during which the league expanded to 15 teams, viewership and attendance grew, and salaries soared. During that same stretch, Engelbert was taken to task by players and fans for insufficiently navigating culture wars.
Montgomery told Front Office Sports that WNBA commissioner is a thankless job: “Somebody is always going to be mad.” Nonetheless, she has friends up for the post and says she’s cautioned them: “‘Are you sure you wanna enter that? Because it’s no joke.’”
