The 2026–27 NBA season tips off Tuesday with a tripleheader featuring some of the league’s highest-profile teams, including the LeBron James–led Sixers and reigning champion Knicks. Much has changed since last season: the resolution of the Clippers scandal, the introduction of anti-tanking measures, and plenty of player movement.

That’s the fine ($286)—along with a 30-day suspension—the Portuguese Football Federation levied against striker Cristiano Ronaldo for leaving training camp before the national team’s game against Denmark earlier this month. The walkout came after Ronaldo was left on the bench for Portugal’s 2–1 win over Norway; he complained that national manager Jorge Jesus had lied to him about his role with the team.
Ronaldo has scored more goals than any soccer player in history, including three for Portugal during this summer’s FIFA men’s World Cup, but the 41-year-old’s impact on the field has waned over the years. His prolific scoring in the Saudi Pro League, which isn’t as revered as European leagues, has masked some of the decline. But as Portugal’s most popular player, he’s proved exceptionally difficult to bench. Before the fine and suspension, the president of Portugal’s football association publicly backed Ronaldo’s return, calling him “one of our key pieces.”

“I felt nothing.”
—Flames goalie Devin Cooley when asked what he felt after saving 34 shots and allowing just two goals Sunday in a rare win for Calgary over the defending champion Hurricanes. “The problem with me is that I have a lot of fun playing, but when I start having too much fun, it makes me from an unconscious goalie to a conscious goalie—and my conscious brain is really bad at playing goalie.” Cooley came into the contest having allowed five goals per game. On Sunday, he said he was in an “unconscious” flow state.
The Flames have used two starting goalies this season, who have combined to allow the most goals per game in the league. Dustin Wolf is one of the higher-paid netminders in the NHL, having signed a seven-year, $52.5 million contract that took effect this season, while Cooley is on just a two-year, $2.7 million contract. Overall, the low-spending Flames have ranked in the top four in cap space each of the last three seasons and haven’t sniffed the playoffs since 2021–22. They’re 2–6 on the season.
